JSB Ranch wraps around a sparkling stretch of the Nueces River not far from the headwaters near Barksdale, Texas, in Real County. The property has been in family ownership since the 1930's.
The JSB Ranch, formerly known as the Boren Ranch, boasts a history of managed cattle grazing, Boer goat production and at one time, a large Angora goat population. Spring-fed lakes supplement the river flow to offer unspoiled wildlife habitat to a wide range of birds, reptiles and small mammals. An early morning ramble through the ranch might turn up a scampering jackrabbit, a darting fox, Coyote or roadrunner, a foraging armadillo or a pack of feral hogs on the rampage. White-tailed Deer feed quietly among the trees, ready to flash the white underside of their stubby tails as they bolt to nearby cover. Large-antlered bucks proudly display their multi-pointed racks while does watch over their spotted fawns. a Great Horned Owl swoops to capture a field mouse, creating a screeching ruckus as he returns to roost from nocturnal adventures.
The family would one day like to operate the JSB Ranch as a non-profit foundation that allows school children and their families the opportunity to experience nature.
