Mark Godfrey

Mark Godfrey worked as a staff photographer for several newspapers in the west in Midwest before joining the Associated Press staff in Vietnam in 1969. In 1970 he contracted with LIFE Magazine to cover Southeast Asia.

In 1973 he joined the photographer's cooperative, Magnum Photos and became a full member in 1974. He remained with Magnum doing magazine editorial assignments until 1981 when he joined with several other Magnum photographers to create Archive pictures (a New York based stock photo agency). In 1989 he became the Director of Photography for U.S. News & World Report; he left that position in 1997 and returned to freelance photography.

Mark has published numerous magazine photo essays in Time, Life, Fortune, U.S.News, N.Y.Times Sunday Magazine and Newsweek and has had cover photos published on many magazines in the United States and abroad. He has photographed several book projects for The National Geographic Society. Mark Godfrey joined staff of The Nature Conservancy in 2003 where he is currently Director of Photography for the worldwide organization.
