Red Creek Nature Ranch consists of 1,000 acres located north of Junction. The ranch spreads over a three-mile stretch of juniper covered hills and valleys of canyons at altitudes varying from 1,600 to 2,050 feet. The ranch is dominated by more than two miles of the meandering stream bed of Red Creek with its intermittent surface flow of spring waters.
The property sits in the Northwest corner of the Hill Country so it contains plant and animal species from both the verdant Hill Country and the more arid geography to the west. At times there is considerable water present in the creek. At other times there is not very much water. A lush oasis of a spring-fed draw feeding a separate water-shed develops in the Northeast corner of the ranch. In the middle of 45 acres of a cultivated field is a nice pond of water stocked with catfish.
Red Creek Ranch has five photo blinds that offer a variety of photographic opportunities. Four of the blinds are in valley sites. Three of those are next to long term deer and turkey feeding sites. The fourth blind is located at the catfish pond which serves as a watering hole for many species. The fifth blind is behind the ranch owner’s home which offers excellent photography of deer, turkeys and wild hogs early and late in the day. All five blinds are next to bird feeding stations. Additionally, there are rabbits, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, skunks, horned toads, various snakes, frogs, turtles, bobcats, reptiles and numerous insects. There has been a recent sighting of a mountain lion just outside the ranch boundary.
There are some excellent photographic opportunities of various species of plants, grasses, shrubs and cactus. There are some challenging landscape possibilities, including mountain vistas with long views. There are several unique limestone bluffs that offer appealing images along with large rock outcroppings. Red Creek Ranch reflects Hill Country ruggedness and remoteness at its best.
Red Creek Ranch management invites and encourages creative exploration by its guests whether they are photographers or nature lovers. The ranch can offer lodging. It has two cabins (one is air-conditioned) with a total of 15 beds and each possesses a complete kitchen with outside grills. Each cabin has a bathroom with a shower. www.redcreeknatureranch.com
