*ICF Charter Member Ranch: Texas Hill Country Nature Photography Alliance
Goerge Arthur Stowers, the founder of Stowers Furniture Company headquartered in San Antonio, established Stowers Ranch in 1904 as a cattle ranch, game management area and hunting preserve. The property is now owned by his grandson and great-grandchildren and offers hunting for White-tailed and exotic bucks and wild turkey, along with bird watching, game viewing, nature photography and hiking. The 11,250-acre ranch is located at the headwaters of the North Fork of the Guadalupe River, approximately 13 miles west of Hunt, Texas, in Kerr County.
The family views eco-tourism as an important twenty-first century intiative - for the ranch, as well as for public education and recreation. The ranch particpates in spring breeding bird surveys and Audubon Christmas bird counts that have identified over 50 different species. Stowers Ranch has entered into a Safe Harbor Agreement with Environmental Defense, actively protecting endangered Golden-cheeked Warblers and creating a 40-acre sanctuary for endangered Black-capped Vireos.
Game viewing, bird watching, wildlife photography and hiking are available by reservation. For the photography enthusiast, Stowers Ranch Company offers specialized photo blinds with water sources and feeders along with workshops and retreats.
